Submitting Movies for Film Festivals

If you have a film idea, a film in progress or a completed film you might consider submitting your film to a film festival. There are also short film festivals for those who love the short film genre.

To submit a film to a popular film festival you must first find the web site for the film festival and then look for the link or form to submit the film. You will be asked to answer some basic questions about the film and you must verify that you have rights to the film in its entirety.  

If the film is a work-in-progress you can consider submission as well. Under some circumstances, these film festivals will accept a work-in-progress for consideration and critique. For an aspiring film maker this type of consideration can be daunting but it is always valuable as your work will be seen by and critiqued by professionals in the industry.

Other requirements for entry may include a submission fee (unless you are a student) and the submission of several copies of the film in DVD format or other format as required. Read the requirements carefully as they often include labeling requirements and other compliance details.   

Submitting your film to a film festival can be a bit overwhelming so be sure you are ready for the attention. If you approach the experience with the right perspective you can learn a lot and make improvements in your next film. Many young film makers have honed their craft in this way and in the process they have gotten invaluable advice from the most respected professionals and their fledgling films have been seen by seasoned audiences.
